20th Annual Double Reed Festival

University of Kansas School of Music, Sunday, Nov 7 from 9 AM- 6 PM

The Midwest Double Reed Society Double Reed Fest is pleased to announce our Double Reed Festival Guest Artists. Dr. Frances Colón is the Director of the Oboe Mobile Foundation in Puerto Rico. Ms. Sue Heineman is the principal bassoonist of the National Symphony Orchestra. The Double Reed Fest is on Sunday, Nov 7 at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS!

The Festival is free but please register here so we can plan accordingly. Several of the events will be live streamed here.

Please note that the University of Kansas has a mask mandate in place. You must wear a mask at all times while in the building to attend the festival.

9:00 AM- 10:00 Registration. Visit Vendors. Nielsen Woodwinds, Nielsen Bocal Supply and Carlos Coelho!
*10:00 – 11:30 – Presentation by Dr. Frances Colón: The Importance of Community Outreach Through Music. Swarthout Recital Hall. This presentation is for oboists and bassoonist alike.
11:30-12:30 – LUNCH and MEMBER MEETING. 1st floor of Murphy. The meeting will be on zoom. Register for link!
*12:30-2:30 – Strategies for Winning Auditions. Panelists: Frances Colón, Celeste Johnson Frehner, Alison Robuck, Theresa Delaplain and Andrew Parker. Mock Orchestral Oboe Auditions. SRH
12:30-2:30 – Bassoon Master Class with Sue Heineman. Room 130
3:00- 4  – Oboe Reed Class. Dr. Andrew Parker. 118

The Midwest Double Reed Society commissioned composer Johanny Navarro to compose a piece for our 20th Annual Double Reed Festival. The piece is entitled “Tema y variaciones sobre la nana by José Ramón Gomis.” It is for oboe and bassoon and will be premiered by Margaret Marco and Eric Stomberg on Nov 7. Additional support for this commission is from Edmund Nielsen Woodwinds, Nielsen Bocal Supply, Cayambis Music Press, Margaret Marco & Andrew Parker.
Celeste Johnson Frehner, oboe; Margaret Marco, oboe d’amore and Erin Huneke, English horn will present the world premiere performance of Ingrid Stolzel’s “Wider Than The Sky” at the Double Reed Festival. The commission is a result of a grant awarded to Professor Johnson Frehner from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2020.
